Plantar Fasciitis

Active Release Technique (ART) is a manual therapy used to treat plantar fasciitis by breaking down scar tissue and adhesions in the soft tissues of the foot and calf muscles, and plantar fascia. It improves range of motion and reduces pain.

The benefits and risks of ART include:

  • ART may improve circulation and blood flow to the plantar fascia.

  • Targeted movements may break up adhesions and scar tissue.

  • Improved blood flow delivers nutrients and oxygen, which may speed healing.

  • It may improve flexibility and range of motion.

  • ART is relatively inexpensive compared to medical interventions.

  • There may be some pain associated with the treatment of plantar fasciitis using ART.

During ART, practitioners apply pressure and movement to the affected area to break up scar tissue. The patient actively flexes the tissue from its shortest to longest range while the practitioner applies pressure to the area. Each movement targets specific muscles, ligaments, or tendons in the foot, encouraging optimal texture and resilience of soft tissues by applying pressure, friction, and lengthening to break up stubborn scar tissue and adhesions to release tension.

To enhance healing with ART, you can ice the inflamed area, wear supportive footwear, take breaks from activities that trigger pain, maintain a healthy weight and physical fitness level, and strengthen calf muscles and correct gait issues.
